The Truth About Education Consultancies in Nepal: Are They Fooling Students About Studying in Germany?

Studying in Germany should be one of the most affordable and high-value choices for Nepali students. But for many, it’s becoming unnecessarily expensive — thanks to some unethical consultancies in Nepal.

What’s Really Happening?

During my own research and visits to several popular consultancies in Kathmandu, I discovered something disturbing:

  • They often push students toward private universities in Germany that charge €10,000–€20,000 per year in tuition fees.
  • Why? Because they earn big commissions from these universities for every student they send — sometimes as high as €2,000–€4,000 per student.
  • Some public university focused consultancies are charging total of more than NPR 2,00,000 even when the application process is free or costs only a few euros.

My Personal Experience

I went to one consultancy, and they told me clearly that they do not apply to public universities — only private ones. When I asked why, I learned it’s because they get commission from these universities. They said they would do everything “for free,” without charging me directly — but the catch was that the private universities they promoted were charging more than €5,000 per semester.

I also visited another consultancy that did help with public university applications, but they wanted NPR 30,000 upfront before starting the process. And if everything worked out — admission, visa, etc. — they demanded €1,000 as a final service charge.

Which, in my opinion, is way too much. These consultancies are only looking out for their own profit, whether it's from student fees or university commissions. That's why I strongly recommend doing the application process on your own.

The Impact on Students

These dishonest practices lead to:

  • Students stuck with loans and financial pressure in a country known for its free education
  • Confusion about visa documents and false promises of guaranteed admission
  • Missed opportunities to study at top-ranked public universities — for free

Examples of Misleading Tactics

  • “German universities need huge payment to process your file.” – Not true (only small fee to uni-assist).
  • “You’ll never get into a public university without us.” – Also false.
  • “Private universities are better ranked.” – Often untrue, especially in Germany where public universities are world-class.

What You Can Do Instead

  • Research on your own: DAAD.de, university websites, Reddit, YouTube, or our platform can guide you step-by-step.
  • Apply through uni-assist: Most public universities accept applications via this centralized portal.
  • Only pay when necessary: Most application fees are €30–€75 total .
  • Ask questions: If a consultancy discourages you from public universities, ask why. Follow the money.

Final Thoughts

Not all consultancies are bad — but many are driven by commission, not your future. If you’re serious about studying in Germany, learn the process and take charge yourself.
