Is Learning German Necessary to Study in Germany? Here’s the Real Answer

One of the most common questions Nepali students ask is: “Do I need to learn German to study in Germany?” The short answer is: No — but you really should learn the basics.

1. You Can Study in Germany Without Knowing German

Yes, it’s true. Germany offers hundreds of English-taught programs for both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, especially in public universities. These programs do not require any German knowledge at the time of application.

So technically, you can go to Germany without speaking a word of German.

2. But Learning Basic German (A1 & A2) is Highly Recommended

Even if your course is fully in English, life outside the classroom in Germany still happens in German. From grocery shopping to dealing with landlords and government offices, German helps a lot.

That’s why I always recommend students to complete A1 and A2 before moving.

3. You Can Learn A1 and A2 Within 30–45 Days

German A1 and A2 levels are basic levels — you don’t need to be fluent. You can easily complete both levels within 30 to 45 days with consistent daily study.

There are online platforms (like Duolingo, DW, Goethe), local language centers, and even YouTube channels offering free content.

4. It Makes Life in Germany Much Easier

Here’s how basic German helps you:

  • Renting apartments
  • Buying groceries or medicine
  • Filling out documents/forms
  • Talking to locals and making friends

It also helps with mental comfort—you don’t feel lost in daily life.

5. Part-Time Jobs Are Easier With German

Many part-time jobs in Germany (restaurants, supermarkets, delivery, etc.) prefer students who can speak some German. Even basic communication gives you an advantage.

Your chances of finding a job increase significantly if you have A2-level German.

6. Your German Will Improve Rapidly After Moving

Once you’re in Germany, you’ll naturally improve. You’ll hear the language every day — at train stations, in shops, with neighbors.

Most students reach B1–B2 level in less than a year just by living and learning there.

By the time you graduate, you’ll likely be fluent or near advanced — which helps with job hunting, internships, and PR (Permanent Residency).

7. Final Advice

Choose an English-taught program — yes. But also prepare for real life in Germany. That means knowing at least basic German.

A1 and A2 German is easy to learn and will give you a huge advantage in every part of your journey.

So don’t skip it. Start today — it’s one of the smartest decisions you’ll make before flying to Germany.
